Jeff Bezos to divorce, does not have prenuptial agreement

Before the rash of recent headlines, even the most frequent Amazon shoppers might have had no idea who the founder of the company was. Now it is hard to miss what is going on with Jeff Bezos, who is still the company's CEO. The news of his divorce has many people in Ohio wondering if they could benefit from a prenuptial agreement.

Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos were married for 25 years before they decided to file for divorce. The couple did not have a pre or postnuptial agreement, and there is likely a significant amount of assets on the line. So if the Bezos did not feel as if they needed the legal protections afforded by a marital agreement, why would anyone else?

Most people think that prenups are only for the ultra-rich, but more common uses focus on unequal distribution of assets. If one person owns a business or has some family money to his or her name, these things are usually worth protecting even if they are not worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Similarly, those who have been married before or who take great care in the management of their finances can probably benefit from a prenup.

Assets should not be the only consideration when Ohio couples are trying to figure out if they need a prenuptial agreement. Most people carry at least some form of debt, and a carefully worded pre or postnuptial agreement can shield a person's partner from creditors seeking repayment. While it might be difficult to say for certain whether Jeff Bezos should have gotten a prenuptial agreement, couples are typically well advised to consider whether this document would be benefit them in the event of a divorce.
